An Olympic-Sized Commitment

An Olympic-Sized Commitment

Yesterday morning, my wife and I were watching the Olympics, specifically the women’s cycling road race and some qualifiying events in gymnastics. (What can I say? it was a lazy Sunday morning and we don’t have cable.)

My son was mostly playing by himself while we watched, but when the gymnastics came on, he started to emulate the athletes on screen. He was bending down and stomping his feet and throwing his hands up and just generally being a very cute, very funny little guy.

And yet during his gold medal cuteness routine, all I could think was: please god don’t somehow end up being good at gymnastics.

Girls Can Be Geeks

Girls Can Be Geeks

The other day when I went to pick my son up from daycare, I saw a little girl in his class wearing a super-cool Wonder Woman dress. It wasn’t a Wonder Woman costume; it was a dress emblazoned with a drawing of Wonder Woman. And it was awesome.

I’ve written before about how much I like superheroes and that I want my son to grow up liking them too. Which I think will probably happen.

But what if I had a daughter? When I was a kid, the likelihood of a little girl liking superheroes wasn’t great. But I wasn’t a kid in this day and age. Girls can be geeks too!

Cutting the Cable Cord

Cutting the Cable Cord

We got rid of cable.

The summer is the perfect time to cancel. We don’t watch reality shows, we don’t watch USA’s oh-so-breezy summer programming…and not much else is on until fall, when, according to the last few commercials I saw, electricty disappears and hack jokes about guys having to be parents – THE HORROR! – are all the rage.

Except for Breaking Bad, there’s not much I can’t wait for.

The stuff I am gonna miss without TV? Sports, filler, and the kids programming. Oh wait, we have plenty of kids programming. No shortage of inane, annoying, loud, bright, anthropomorphized animals and songs about brushing your teeth here.

I Won’t Let My Son Play Football

I Won’t Let My Son Play Football

Junior Seau died Wednesday in an apparent suicide. A legendary member of the San Diego Chargers (along with less legendary stints with the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots) and surefire Hall-of-Famer, Seau joins a growing list of NFL players who’ve died too young.

As someone who follows the NFL pretty devotedly, in matters both on the field and off, I’m guessing it won’t be long before someone links Seau’s suicide to the concussions and head trauma he suffered throughout his hall of fame career (in fact, it’s already happened).

Is there any parent left that is going to let their kid play football? Outside of Texas, I mean.

The Hunger Games: Toddler-Style

The Hunger Games: Toddler-Style

Competition is all the rage in March, what with the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament and that other thing with women playing sports that ESPN pretends to care about. Every other website posts some March Madness-influenced bracket based around best TV shows, hottest chicks, etc. Someone needs to create a bracket where all the different brackets are pitted against each other.

This weekend adds another competition-based entity to the mix, the Hunger Games flick, which is a remake of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s classic flick The Running Man, I think, just with kids needing to kill-or-be-killed in a lethal arena within some futuristic dystopia (interestingly, Jennifer Lawrence is a top seed in March Hotness too).

All this has got me thinking about how my son would fare in such situations…
