Blogger Idol 2012: Week 5 – Sh*t Just Got Real

Blogger Idol 2012: Week 5 – Sh*t Just Got Real

Things got serious this week.

The assignment was to present our take on a hot news topic. My choice, like most of the others, doesn’t easily lend itself to comedy. So I got real on your asses and laid out my opinion on the same-sex issue that has been dividing the country for years.

It’s become more personal to me since I had my son and will be even more relevant now that we’re moving to North Carolina, a state where the fight for equality has some real obstacles.

Like Amendment One.

Teach Impediment

Teach Impediment

The reality of being a dad has a way of completely upending your pre-parent expectations.

A few months ago, I wrote about looking forward to the “Rose Is Rose” portion of toddlerhood, in which my son would babble adorably and I’d be forced to puzzle out what he was saying. Like a sophisticated, more intelligent version of The Da Vinci Code (with much less Jesus but a much better vocabulary).

Unfortunately, it’s not difficult to decipher my sons favorite words, most of which revolve around refusing to eat things, refusing to do things and refusing to stop doing things. It’s not really that adorable.

The funny pages lied to me.

Zombie Post: And I Thought Babies Were Crazy!

Zombie Post: And I Thought Babies Were Crazy!

About two years ago, barely more than a month into the whole “Wow, I own a baby!” thing, I wrote a post comparing babies to lunatics. I’ve resurrected it below. Whose Blog Is It Anyway?

Whose Blog Is It Anyway?

Lately I’ve been participating in this blog contest, Blogger Idol.

In order to enter the contest we needed to submit an audition, explaining our blogs and inviting the judges to take a look at them. Somehow I managed to make the finals, over the course of which I am tasked with a new assignment every week that is meant to stretch my writing abilities. Our assignments are rated by a selection of judges, whose scores are then combined with at-large votes from the online community.

I am still alive, but none of the assignments so far has exactly been in my wheelhouse, and several of the judges have professed reservations about some of my drinking-related and/or fatherhood-griping-related content. Which has confused me a little, since I auditioned and all. But it’s not their fault if they don’t like my blog or my sense of humor. It’s the luck of the draw.

But now I am faced with a bit of a dilemma. Because I want to win the contest. But not by changing my style.

Blogger Idol 2012 – Week 4: Judge Dread

So for this week’s assignment, I was paired with Martinis and Minivans, a similarly-minded blogger who writes about how her kids drive her to drink.

I only have one kid, and I’ve basically been drunk since he was born, so we made a good team.

Unfortunately the judges didn’t think so.

That’s where you come in.
