Before we have kids, we often make a lot of hyperbolic statements about the things we can’t live without. Things like bacon and beer, as well as certain albums and books and movies.
Then you have kids, and those kids immediately skyrocket to the top of the list. Some of the other items on the list are displaced, having instantly become frivolous, but some of them remain, and even grow in importance.
Like coffee!
There’s nary a parent alive that doesn’t love coffee.
Our kids may force us to open our eyes every morning, but it’s coffee that wakes us up. Sometimes the smell alone does it. But the smell plus my toddler shrieking at my bedside to follow him into the kitchen is simply an unbeatable combination!
(Throw in the act of changing a dirty diaper and together that combination is the equivalent of being stabbed with an adrenaline needle by Vincent Vega.)
Probably the best decision I ever made was to have kids to start drinking my coffee black. Not only does it make me feel like Sam Spade, just think of all the calories I’ve saved by not adding milk or cream multiple times a day every day for the previous and forthcoming 20+ years of my life?
Besides, I like to drink coffee, not dessert. Double besides, my kids will never bogart my coffee the way they do everything else in my life because black coffee is an acquired taste and children don’t the patience to finish saying the word “acquired.” So I need a coffee with some flavor, which is why I’ve been giving FolgersĀ® Coffeehouse Blend a shot the past few days.
The best part of waking up is when you do it on your own because you’re well-rested and not when your kids jump onto your crotch, but the other best part is Folgers in your cup! (They should add that first part to their jingle.)
For Father’s Day, Folgers sent me some of their new Folgers Coffeehouse Blend to try, and they’re really pushing it’s versatility. It works as French Press, pour over, cold brew, and what’s been my favorite way to drink it so far, iced. Iced coffee is key for parents because odds are when you’ve got kids running around, even your hot coffee is going to get cold in a hurry.
(Pro Tip: throw the coffee and ice in a martini shaker and shake it up a bit. Not only will it get nice and chilled, it adds a nice froth to the top. You’re welcome!)
I’m 40. When I was a teenager, coffee wasn’t yet a part of my life the way it is for every high-schooler today. But I can’t remember a time in the past 20 years that I haven’t relied on it, and I can’t remember a day in the last seven, since my first kid was born, when I haven’t gone to bed dreaming of my first cup the next morning.
Now, thanks to Folgers‘ thoughtful gift, I have plenty of coffee with which to survive Father’s Day weekend and beyond.
