You may have heard that I’m having another kid.
I have no idea what this child will be like, but if it’s a boy, I’m pretty sure there are two things I can bank on:
1) He’ll like trucks.
2) He’ll like dinosaurs.
Detective Munch certainly does.
I liked dinosaurs when I was a little kid. A lot. I still remember a favorite field trip to the Peabody Museum in New Haven, loving the fossils and leaving with an awesome dinosaur-shaped pencil eraser. And even thought I can’t be positive, and I’m not exactly a gear-head today, I probably liked trucks too. I mean, I know I liked cement mixer trucks because WHO DOESN’T?
Certain things just seem to be pretty universal among boys (though if your little boy doesn’t like trucks, or superheroes, or sports, that’s okay too!) 
Dinosaurs and trucks are the small boy equivalent of football and beer. So I’m surprised it took someone this long to come up with a kids show that combines them. (Someone already came up with a toy that does. And my son still loves that thing!)
This month, Netflix premiered “Dinotrux,” a new cartoon about dinosaur/truck hybrids which could only be more up my son’s alley if they wore capes and constantly told their parents “no!” Whenever my son turns it on, it’s like he just scored a free trip to the Champagne Room. Dinosaurs and trucks are like catnip to a feline. Blood to a vampire. Free time to a parent. 100% pure unadulterated ecstasy.
My son loves it to the point that I feel bad for the non-truck/Dino shows. I don’t know if even Star Wars and superheroes can withstand this assault. Add in the fact that the series teaches about friendship and problem-solving and stuff, which has sold Mom and Buried and me, and it’s a slam dunk.
Judging by the success of the latest Jurassic Park flick, dinosaurs aren’t just for little boys. (Unless that was just about Chris Pratt. My son hasn’t discovered him yet.) But my son already knows more about them than I do, and he probably knows more about construction trucks too. He definitely knows more about dinosaur/truck hybrids.
I’m not sure how well any of that will serve him when he’s older, but when he starts Kindergarten in a few weeks, he’s going to crush the morning water cooler conversations.
As part of the Netflix Stream Team, I was compensated with a year’s subscription to Netflix for a year and an iPad Mini. But my opinions are 100% my own.
Except for the ones Mom and Buried provides for me.
If you want to see an interesting phenomenon, sneak up behind him when he’s watching the show and turn it off. The reactions are priceless.
You can try the sneaking up idea but when they get older and figure out how to work the remote expect to see your show disappear unexpectedly. Hilarious! And to add to the fun your response will leave you looking like a raging hypocrite (though most parenting ends up hypocritical if we’re honest 😉 )
